Your Vehicle Needs To Drink Up Too!

Fluid maintenance is at the core of preventative care. Similar to how we need water, your car, SUV, or truck relies on various fluids to function and stay healthy. Suppose your vehicle fluids aren't frequently inspected and refreshed; your automobile will experience weak performance, lower gas mileage, diminish in value, and a higher risk of a breakdown or collision.

The 6 Essential Fluids

There are six fluids that most automobiles depend on: engine oil, transmission fluid, brake fluid, coolant, power steering fluid, and windshield wiper fluid.

1) Engine Oil

Engine oil, or motor oil, is the most necessary (and most frequently serviced) fluid of all. As you may know, engine oil is responsible for lubricating your engine's components and drawing away excess heat from the core. There are three different varieties of engine oil: conventional, semi-synthetic, and synthetic. To find which one your vehicle takes, please refer to your owner's manual.

2) Transmission Fluid

Similar to oil, transmission fluid does the same for (you guessed it) the transmission. It is almost always red. If you see that the fluid looks discolored or dirty, you should have it changed or flushed promptly.

3) Brake Fluid

Without a brake solution, your car would never be able to stop. Signs like a longer stopping distance and unusual, spongy brakes typically indicate that you need to change or top off your brake fluid.

4) Coolant

Coolant is a mixture of water and antifreeze, and this solution supports your car by absorbing heat and carrying deadly byproducts out of the exhaust system. Without coolant, your engine would undoubtedly overheat.

5) Power Steering Fluid

The power steering fluid is often overlooked, but it plays a vital role in giving you a smooth ride. Without it, your steering wheel will be tough to use, making it challenging for you to make necessary turns. It can be extremely hazardous if you run low on this fluid.

6) Windshield Wiper Fluid

Windscreen washer fluid may not necessarily be vital to your vehicle's life, but it is for you. You will need it if something is blocking your line of sight.

Now you know why mechanics stress fluid maintenance so much. The more often you inspect them, the better to catch things early on (leaks, low levels, contamination, etc.). If you require assistance in changing or flushing your fluids, we invite you to bring your car to our exceptional team at The Car and Truck Guys.
